March 2024 Blog Post

Hi folks,

This is Jacob with Earthrun Farm and we've got SO many updates for what went down in the month of February into early March on the farm. With the help of some unbelievable volunteers and experienced builders, we've completed our dream mobile chicken house. From the bare bones of an old hay wagon to a now very sturdy functional mobile chicken house, I am completely thrilled with how this project turned out. Our layers have now adjusted to the new mega fancy coop they were gifted with and are filling the nesting boxes with farm fresh eggs.

With the coming of spring swiftly approaching, our plant starts are eager to get in the ground and we are only three weeks away from our first batch of meat bird chicks arriving on the farm. The next big project is constructing a new chicken tractor for our meat birds using repurposed parts from a large high tunnel. I will go into detail on the design and function of the new chicken tractor in a future blog post.

In the next few weeks, constructing the high tunnel chicken tractor and prepping the ground for our cool season crops/seed potatoes/onions is priority. We will be using an existing plot from last season that is cover-cropped and ready to go and establishing a new plot on un-tilled land to expand our vegetable production. Once the ground is prepped for the new plot we can add in our irrigation system and put some plants in the ground!!!

Another fun endeavor we are working towards is hatching our own chicks! It has been a time to learn the ins and outs of our incubator but we have a batch of 30 or so fertile eggs in and are just a few weeks away from hopefully hatching some of our own laying hens!

PRICE UPDATE: With all the labor, feed costs, and demand, we are now selling our farm fresh eggs for $6 a dozen or buy two dozen for $10. I will be sending out a separate email shortly to all our egg customers with details on pickup location and farmers market dates.

Thank you so much for your support and enjoy the pics below!
